Painting Canopies

As I started to see some awesome paint jobs on other people heli's, I decided to take up airbrushing as yet another hobby. Below are some of my paint jobs before I got an airbrush.

My oldest painted canopy is a clear Lexan canopy from Align, and I painted it from the inside like with most r/c car bodies. I learned this is the worst way to paint a one-piece canopy! Its nearly impossible to get paint laid on evenly because you can't get your can or airbrush near the nose. It's also incredibly difficult to lay down masking material because its hard to reach in there and apply it. I didn't take any photos before a bad crash, so here it is after "the ground caught my fall."

This was painted with aerosol cans: Pactra Racing Finish's Indy Silver, Candy Blue, Fluorescent Orange, and Fluorescent Green. As you can see the coats did not go on even, and the masking sucked. Part of it was my inexperience, but a big part was also trying to paint it from the inside.

I also learned how crucial it is to thoroughly shake the cans for nearly a minute... especially with the florescent colors. The green went on horribly...

My T-Rex 450S... heavily upgraded

Well, I guess I will start out my blog by posting about one of my passions: radio controlled cars and aircraft... most of all: helicopters! Below are two side views of my Align T-Rex 450S, with lots of upgrades.

Here what it entails:
Align T-Rex 450S CF kit, with Align 430L brushless motor, and RCE-BL35X speed control
Align 325mm wood main blades
Futaba GY401 gyro
3x Hitec HS-65MG servos for the swashplate, and Hitec HS-81MG for the tail
Gorilla-Gear landing gear (awesome!)
And over the course of crashes, I gradually upgraded the plastic parts to aluminium, and needless to say its nearly all metal now :)

I painted that canopy with high-visibility in mind, and matched the fins with colored tape accordingly. The left side of my heli is orange, and the right side is green. This one change probably reduced my crashes by 50% or more.

With all of the upgrades in it, I've got crashes resulting in minimal damaged parts: feathering shaft, main blades, flybar, and occasionally the main gear and canopy. This little heli turned out to be incredible durable!
